Inquilabi seeks implementation of Aug 13 resolution? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 13: Mahaz-e-Azadi chief, Azam Inquilabi has urged the UN Secretary General, Ban-ki-Moon to implement August 13, 1948 resolution on Kashmir. Azam Inquilabi is a voracious reader and has been in politics for more than five decades. However, today's statement reflects his ignorance about the resolutions. The August 13 resolution does not make a mention of India and Pakistan. Pro-Independence groups believe that it has scope for third option. They have time and again demanded repeal of January 5, 1949 resolution that has restricted the choice between India and Pakistan. However, Inquilabi must know that the two resolutions cannot be implemented in isolation. They cannot be separated from each other. When the August 13 resolution was passed, India and Pakistan were at war. The two neighbours decided to enforce cease-fire on January 1, 1949 exactly after one year when Kashmir dispute was taken to the United Nations. The UN resolutions, pertinent to mention here triggered an ideological war between different groups in 1992. Hundreds of persons got killed in such clashes. While the JKLF lobby sought implementation of August 13 resolution, the pro-Pakistan lobby stood for January 5 resolution. Both the lobbies, however, had to eat a humble pie in December 1996 when UN dropped the dispute from its agenda . It was after hecftic diplomatic activity by Islamabad that the issue was taken back on the UN agenda. But soon after, former Secretary General, Kofi Anan made it amply clear that the resolutions on Kashmir could not be implemented. Professor Abdul Ghani Bhat was the first to admit it harsh reality publicly. He is in favour of seeking alliances outside the separatist spectrum for speeding up the resolution process. |
