Land mafia on run; SDA, Srinagar administration up in arms against unauthorized colonies | | | Bashir Assad SRINAGAR, Aug 13: Srinagar Development Authority (SDA) and District Administration have finally collaborated with each other to arrest the trend of raising unauthorized residential colonies by the builders in violation of the norms in city outskirts to restore and maintain the beautification of the centuries old capital city. A team of SDA officials and Srinagar District Administration today conducted a joint inspection of one of the unauthorized residential colony namely Indrabi Colony in an attempt to crack whip on builders violating Master Plan while raising housing colonies falling within the area of operation of SDA. Pertinently Director Local Bodies and Srinagar Municipal Corporation had questioned the jurisdiction of SDA on the plea that it was actually their domain to decide about the fate of the colonies in question. However, Srinagar District Administration endorsing its call on breaking the vicious circle of land mafia involved in violation of Srinagar Master Plan, came in support of SDA . It was in this context that a team of district administration Srinagar and SDA today visited Indrabi Colony being constructed on Sringar-Baramulla Road near Narbal crossing for spot verification. The builder, without any authority, is constructing a large number of houses and is deviating from the land use plan without permission" a SDA official told Early Times. He said that SDA had sought intervention of Deputy Commissioner Srinagar in the matter pertaining to the construction of the houses in gross violation of the Srinagar Master Plan. "The phenomenon needs to be stopped immediately so that such trend is arrested for maintaining the beautification of the summer capital" the official said. Hinting at taking strong action against the builders and land mafia involved in construction of illegal and unauthorized residential colonies in peripheries of Srinagar city like Narbal, Nowgam by-pass, Saffron Colony Pampore and other such areas, official said that the guilty shall be dealt with law. "Time and again our enforcement teams have visited these sites, so that the master plan can be properly implemented but the builders are using dogging tactics to defer the orders and continue with the illegal construction work keeping all rules and regulations at bay" the official added. He further added that land mafia in twin capital cities have not only developed unauthorized residential colonies but were also responsible for raising cost of the land to the skies. Ever since, SDA swung into action against unauthorized colonies, land mafia is on run due to which value of the land has come down considerably. Pertinently some builders have been raising housing colonies in the outskirts of city over so many years. However, this is the first instance of its kind when authorities have woken up to check the 'illegal' constructions. It merits a mention here that a House Committee has directed the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to furnish the list of officers/officials who are responsible for granting illegal permissions. Srinagar Master Plan covers 416 sq kms of Greater Srinagar which encompasses from the foothills near Harwan on the North, Saidpora upto Nambal, Shalbugh on the North-West, Mujgund on left side bank of river Jhelum, Narbal towards West on Srinagar-Baramulla highway, Soibugh, Ompora on the South-West, Wathora, Wagoora on the South, Gallander on South-East and Khrew on the East. Collaboration of Srinagar District Administration with SDA is seen as a big development which according to some, has exposed the nexus between builders and SMC. |
