Night before I-day is crucial; borders sealed, police put multi-tier security cordon around city | | | BHARAT BHUSHAN
JAMMU, Aug 14: The night before Independence Day is very crucial in the J&K's winter capital notwithstanding the fact that the unfolding of Pak plans to infiltrate militants through the secret tunnel at Chilyari in Samba sub-sector near here has to a large extent eased off pressure on the Indian security agencies. The tunnel, which had its opening somewhere inside the Pak territory, extended at least 450 mt into India from the International Border (IB). Lots of militants were to be infiltrated through it on the eve of Independence Day but its chance detection by a farmer on July 28 last after his border field caved in at two to three places has beyond any doubt eased off a psychological pressure on the security agencies. Its detection is also believed to have led to the saving of a possible bloodshed on August 15. A senior police officer said the tunnel detection before the Independence Day must not lead to complacency as the enemy was expected to make use of every possible method to infiltrate militants. "There is no room for complacency given the past record of the neighbouring country," he added. The officer said while police had put a multi-tier security cordon around the winter capital city, plugging all its entry points; the borders had also been sealed to stop Pakistan from infiltrating militants. Apart from blocking entry points to the city and making the venue of the main function out of bounds for general public to keep away the saboteurs of peace, police this evening laid surprise check points on the outer Narwal road, Narwal-Nagrota stretch of the Bypass Road, Circular Road, Gharota, Bhalwal and some other areas on the upper Akhnoor road. He said police and security agencies in Jammu were on tenterhooks following intelligence inputs about militant plans to create disturbance on Independence Day. He said to ensure incident-free conduct of the celebrations, police had put a multi-tier security cordon around the winter capital city. No vehicle was being allowed to enter the city unchecked. Surprise cordons and checks were also organised on the Nikki Tawi river bed -- a known infiltration route -- and in all the border villages from Paharpur in Kathua to Poonch, he added. The troops had laid multiple ambushes in the border villages where people had been asked to remain vigilant and contact police, or security forces in case they happened to spot an outsider in their area. The counter-insurgency (CI) forces had also taken positions on the Manda hills, overlooking the Hari Singh Palace-Nagrota stretch of the National Highway and the lower Radio Station-Nagrota road here. In the city, armed cops had taken positions on the PCR building and other high buildings to keep an eye on the subversive elements. Cops could also be seen frisking suspects on the city roads and in the streets. Security was also strengthened around the famous Raghunath Temple, Ranbireshwar Temple and some other religious places, besides vital police and army installations. The officer said it would be an untiring vigil for police and security forces tonight, with senior police officers monitoring the situation to thwart any terror attack. All the district SPs had been directed to personally monitor nakas and ambush parties tonight, he added.
