Jammu, Aug 16: The Congress and the Congress-dominated UPA Government are feeling relieved these days. They are feeling relieved because social activist Anna Hazare on August 4 suddenly called off fast-unto-death and disbanded his team, called Team Anna. The Congress says that the Anna factor has become a story of the past. The Congress and the Congress-dominated UPA Government are also feeling relieved because Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev yesterday broke his fast and went back to Haridwar. Reflecting on the yesterday's developments, not one but many jubilant Congress spokespersons said that Baba Ramdev has lost his identity and become irrelevant. All the Congress spokespersons in one voice said that both Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev are the agents of the BJP and the RSS.
It is not a correct assessment that Anna and Ramdev factors have become a story of the past and that they cannot spoil the electoral prospects of the Congress party. The Anna and Ramdev factors are very much there and both these factors are going to play a very crucial role in the 2014 general elections. Anna Hazare and Ramdev symbolize the people's sentiments and the people's sentiments are undoubtedly against the Congress. An impression has gone down across the country that the Congress is a corrupt party or that the Congress and corruption are the two sides of one and the same coin. It is hardly necessary to report the scams the Congress Ministers and the UPA Government are involved in, as everyone in the country and outside is fully aware of what has happened in India during the UPA rule or whatever one call it. The BJP calls it misrule, mismanagement and what not. It also contemptuously dismisses the Congress dispensation as the most corrupt and weak. The Left parties call it anti-people and corrupt rule. They also term the present dispensation as a pro-American and pro-corporate. The fact is that all the political parties, barring the Muslim League, are, like the middle and lower middle classes, plus the country's youth who constitute nearly 40 per cent of the country's population, are one against the Congress and its (mis)rule and they are waiting for an opportune time to inflict a crushing defeat on it.
It was not for nothing that people in their lakhs swung solidly behind Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev. They joined the anti-corruption and bring-back-to-India-black money-crusades launched by Anna and Ramdev on their own and demonstrated their intense desire to bring down the UPA Government and decimate the Congress party. They continue to repose their faith in Anna and Ramdev and they are in crores and spread across the country, including urban and rural India. People are, of course, against the over ambitious and controversial members of Team Anna, including Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan, Sanjay Singh, Medha Patekar, and even Kiran Bedi because they exploited Anna Hazare to promote their political interests, but they are with Anna and what he stands for. Anna will bounce back sooner than later. He is a man with mass experience and he knows where and when to strike.
As for Baba Ramdev, he has put in hard work for years. He is a man of the masses. He may be crude but he is very capable. He enjoys support of almost all the political parties and the Congress's arrogance has compelled him to take an out-and-out anti-Congress line. Before he left the Ambedkar Stadium (New Delhi) for Haridwar, his headquarters, he gave four slogans in presence of thousands of his supporters and followers and one of the slogans was: "Congress hatao, desh bachao" (Remove Congress, save the country). "The result of any protest is not determined by the Government but by the people. I am happy that over 400 MPs in Parliament supported our demands. This Government has cheated the people and Parliament," he said breaking his 6-day-long fast. There is no doubt whatever that Baba Ramdev has caused an irreparable damage to the Congress party. It would be an act of naivety if the Congress ignores his threat that he will ensure its comprehensive defeat.
To be more precise, both Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev have become very important factors in the country's political situation. Their critics may not appreciate this fact, but it is a hard fact that they are going to ensure the political demise of the Congress party. The Congress party is already very weak and unpopular in Orissa, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Jammu & Kashmir. In conclusion it can be said that an anti-Congress wave is sweeping the country, with the deeply hurt Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev further making things very difficult for the Congress. |
