Omar concedes 'defeat' on AFSPA | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 16: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has now formally conceded the point that he will not be able to convince the Centre on his long standing- even pestering-demand of partial lifting of AFSPA from some 'peaceful' districts of the State. In his Independence Day message, Omar Abdullah didn't make a mention of it. He even didn't say that Government is making efforts to lift some of the Act. I-Day speech is a reflection of the Government's vision, policies and programs. It also speaks about the intention of the Government. The message assumes such significance that former Prime Minister AB Vajpayee had extended hand of friendship to Pakistan in one of his I-Day speeches. It is also because of the importance attached to it that today-the I-Day of Pakistan- their Prime Minister once again raked up Kashmir issue. The Chief Minister who had about an year back publicly announced that Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSAP) would be lifted soon should have made mention of it to signal his intentions: that he is serious and sincere about it. Omar had now probably recognized that things won't be same for now on account of one important political development. His friends, and to an extent patron- former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is no more at the helm of the affairs. It was he, who was supportive of his idea on this account though he couldn't cut the ice with his colleagues in Union Cabinet on this account. The new Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, is not only grounded and old political fox but he is too cautious to antagonize his colleagues by even advocating this demand of Omar Abdullah. Omar got the first hint of Centre's disapproval when the new Army chief didn't make a mention of this Act even in a slightest manner and had reportedly rebuffed Omar on this account. And now the change of guard at Home Ministry the doors looked plainly closed for him on this account. In all accounts it's because of the realization on this account that Omar has gradually started distancing himself on this account and this I-day message was glaring reflection of it. |
