On pious day CM questions the State's political status
Real Problem

RUSTAM
JAMMU, Aug 17: The nation celebrates August 15 as Independence Day across the country with great pomp and show and takes a solemn pledge to defend the country's unity and territorial integrity and watch and further promote her sovereign interests. In fact, the nation remembers all those heroes and valiant soldiers who made supreme sacrifices for the national cause and achieved for the country political redemption. But here is a state in the country whose Chief Minister, instead of committing himself and his government to defend the state and the country and uphold all that the Indian Constitution and State Constitution embody, use this pious occasion to question the political status of the state he rules. In other words, he uses the official communication network to air his controversial views with a view to creating serious doubts in the minds of the gullible Kashmiri Muslims about the very accession of the state with India.
Take, for example, what Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on August 14 in his Independence Day message to people on Doordarshan and All-India Radio, Kashmir. He, among other things, said: Economic measures cannot solve the political issues (read Kashmir issue). Find out ways and means to address these issues politically. Both internal and external dimensions of Kashmir issue require equal focusing. I am hopeful that the dialogue process restarted between India and Pakistan will yield results. While discussing the major issues, the two countries should devote attention to resolve smaller issues like converting cross LoC trade into normal trade from the present barter status, making visa regime easy, helping implementation of rehabilitation policy for youth (read terrorists and separatists), etc. in the upcoming Foreign Ministers' Conference. The separatists should come forward, take best advantage of current favourable political scenario and talk with Government of India to secure a bright future for the state and its people (read Kashmir and Kashmiri Muslims).
The Chief Minister did not utter a word for those thousands of Indian heroes and committed and dedicated soldiers who sacrificed their lives all in order to achieve freedom from the British imperialists. Nor did he say anything about the dangers the nation has been facing from Pakistan and radicals and separatists. On the contrary, he willfully and with a purpose went beyond the confines of the Indian Constitution by questioning what was settled 65 years ago. He demanded greater autonomy without saying say so and he urged New Delhi to accommodate the Pakistani viewpoint on Jammu & Kashmir. As expected, the Indian political establishment, which is controlled by Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh, did not think it appropriate to even react.
The problem in Kashmir is not the Kashmiri extremists and Kashmiri separatists. They can be tackled in no time. The real problem lies somewhere else. It lies in the political establishment. There are elements in the political establishment who have created a mess in Kashmir by giving legitimacy to the handful of secessionists for vote-bank politics. And it is not easy to tackle these elements as they have established their stranglehold over the system. A change, if not a revolution, is needed to stem the rot.
