ET vindicated: Omar realises futility of AFSPA
8/17/2012 11:54:40 PM
early tiems report
Jammu , Aug 17: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had formally admitted that he has not been able to convince Centre for revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
In his address on I-Day function at Srinagar on Aug 14 Omar had said "talks on AFSPA are going on. I regret so far we have not reached a stage when AFSPA can be removed permanently."
ET had two-day back reported that Omar realizing the futility of this demand had even skipped it from his address on the eve of independence day on Aug 14.
He had said that talks are going on with Army on this issue.
Omar had in one of his address at Srinagar itself about an year back had set the balloon of AFSPA revocation.
But he soon realized its futility. As debate generated and Army stood on its ground, the Chief Minister admitted on the floor of the Assembly that he has to back track on this demand.
Later, in an interview to a national daily Omar had said" I fail to understand the logic of Army on keeping AFSPA across the State."
And now five-months later after this interview was published the CM had publicly acknowledged its futility.
It shows the gradual realization of the fact by the CM that political demand of one particular party more so an individual can't be taken on its face value by the Centre especially when the Army is involved.
The force which has presence of about five-lakh its personnel in the State, and which has strangulated the terrorist network has also paid a heavy price and rightly has last word on it.
It's for this reason that Defence Minister had repeatedly stood by the concern of the Army and even scuttled the move by former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram on this issue.
However, Omar is trying to keep balloon flying by saying that it will during his tenure.
It's aimed at keeping his political flock in good humour.
The point Omar is missing that State will go to polls when Parliamentary elections will be due to the corner. And no political party, even a novice one, will risk its political results by even tinkering with such sensitive move.
