In CM's Ganderbal, healthy gal bladder same as swollen appendix for doctors | | | early times report Srinagar, Aug 17: The shocking incident of doctors at SDH Ganderbal removing the gall bladder of a patient instead of the appendix for whose inflammation she had been admitted is yet another tragedy in the continuing saga of pain and suffering for the people of the Valley. BMO Ganderbal has tried to cool tempers by saying that a "high level inquiry has already been ordered into the incident." This statement has only added insult to the injury suffered by the woman who lost her gall bladder to the callousness of the doctors and proves that the healthcare sector of the Valley needs an immediate overhaul. The BMO is just a block level medical officer and it is difficult to understand what she meant by saying that a high level inquiry has been ordered into the incident. After all, the service conduct rules do not authorize a BMO to order a probe headed either by the Chief Secretary of the State or the State Vigilance commissioner. It is clear the clueless BMO was trying to address the problem of being manhandled by the husband and the relatives of the unfortunate woman who fell into the irresponsible and callous hands of the two surgeons who operated upon her. It is a shame that such an incident should have occurred in Ganderbal which is the assembly constituency of the State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Not that the CM can be blamed for holding any brief on account of the erring doctors, but for the simple fact that if doctors can afford and get away with a serious lapse like this in CM's constituency what should people living in other places be prepared for? It was at the same SDH that a pregnant woman was sent back by the doctors earlier this month telling the relatives that the time for her delivery had not yet come. The pregnant woman had delivered a baby the same day when she was being taken back to her home from SDH Ganderbal. That a tragedy like this should happen in neighbouring Ganderbal when the wounds of the deaths of hundreds of children at the GB Pant hospital in the city are still fresh demands immediate action from the government. The callous of the doctors at the GB Pant hospital or SDH Ganderbal might be glaring examples of what is happening elsewhere in the hospitals of the Valley. Before the slow moving machine of justice moves in, it is the duty of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to set his house in order. If benefitting punishment is given to doctors at SDH Ganderbal it is likely that others would think twice before casually opening the abdomen of a patient and mistaking a healthy gal bladder for a swollen vermiform appendix.
