Scams hit Cong against altering political arrangement in JK | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 18 : Notwithstanding pressure from a section of leaders, belonging to the camp of loyalists headed by Saif-ud-Din Soz, for change in guard in Jammu and Kashmir the party high command continues to be divided over the plan of snapping ties with the National Conference. Reports said that with new scams tarnishing the .image of the Congress led UPA Government in the centre the majority of the Congress leaders in New Delhi are opposed to moves aimed at altering the three-year old political and administrative arrangement in the state. Party sources confirmed that a section of leaders in the Congress Working Committee are for snapping ties with the NC following fears that sharing power with the NC could lead to a major erosion in the areas of influence of the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir. Sources disclosed that the plan to unseat Omar Abdullah would have been executed had not the AICC Chief, Sonia Gandhi, her son, Rahul Gandhi, AICC general Secretary, Union Finance Minister, P Chidambaram, and the Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, opposed the idea. Reports said that Sonia and Rahul oppose cha nge in the present political arrangement on the plea that it could lead to destabilization of political programme and security scenario. Chidambaram too has favoured continuation of the political arrangement that had been hammered out in 2008. According to these reports, Omar Abdullah has found in Rahul Gandhi a dependable supporter because right from the summer of 2010,when Kashmir was gripped by civilian strife, in which people were killed in police firing, Rahul Gandhi has brushed aside demand from a major section of the Congress leaders for snapping ties with the National Conference. What seems to lend support to Omar is the growing rift in the state unit of the Congress. Those supporting Azad have conveyed to Delhi that the three year old political arrangement needed to be strengthened. Their opinion receives weight from Azad who has good relations with all the CWC members, including Sonia Gandhi. But the loyalists, led by Saif-ud-Din Soz, have apprised the party high command about the political losses that the Congress could face if the alliance with the NC was kept intact. One thing seems to be certain the three year old political arrangement may not be altered for another six months during which the party high command would watch the performance of Omar and his team. |
