Ansari's appointment as UGC member not surprising | Rewarding The Undesirable | | Rustam jammu, Aug 18: The Ministry of Human Resource Development on August 16 appointed former interlocutor for Jammu and Kashmir MM Ansari as member of University Grants Commission (UGC) for a term of three years. It should not surprise anyone. New Delhi has consistently rewarded those who have either spoken against India and Indian Constitution or who have demanded independence for Jammu and Kashmir from India. During the Vajpayee regime, Amitabh Mattoo, who had written extensively on Jammu and Kashmir and demanded for it a separate dispensation as well as a mechanism that promoted the Pakistani cause in the Indian Jammu and Kashmir, was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University. He was appointed for a term of three years, but he was given an extension of three years almost a year before he completed the first term. The Congress-led UPA Government also appreciated his contribution and conferred on him Padma Bhibhushan. He was rewarded because of his positive contribution to the politics of separatism, based on religious fanaticism. He had converted Jammu University into a den of undesirable activities. He even accommodated some close relatives of well-known separatists. Manmohan Singh, who replaced Vajpayee as Prime Minister on May 22, 2004, treaded the path charted by his immediate predecessor with a renewed zeal. His government appointed Hasib Drabu as chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd. He was rewarded two days after he publicly rejected the demand of autonomy and merger with Pakistan and demanded independence for Jammu and Kashmir. He demanded independence while participating in a debate on Jammu and Kashmir organized by NDTV 24X7. Barkha Dutt was the anchor and the programme was titled "We the people". Thereafter, a number of protagonists of autonomy and self-rule and sympathizers of Pakistan were rewarded by the UPA Government as well as Jammu and Kashmir Government. For example, Sidiq Wahid and Riaz Punjabi, who were known for their highly controversial views on Jammu and Kashmir and had fanned communalism of worst form for years, were appointed Vice-Chancellors of Islamic University (Kashmir) and Kashmir University, respectively. Punjabi, like Mattoo, was also awarded Padma Bhushan. As for Wahid, he had earlier been appointed as Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair Professor, University of Jammu. It happened during the tenure of Mattoo. Both were prominent members of the controversial PUGWASH and both had visited a number of foreign countries, including Pakistan, and advocated the cause of the Kashmiri communalists as well as Islamabad. The appointment of Ansari as member of the UGC should also be viewed in this context. His qualification, like the qualification of Mattoo, Drabu, Wahid and Punjabi, has been that he and two other interlocutors - Dilip Padgaonkar and Radha Kumar - have prepared a report which, if accepted and given an effect to, will end the Indian presence in Jammu and Kashmir. It is indeed disturbing that the Indian State is controlled by those who, instead of isolating and punishing the undesirable and rogues, are rewarding them and putting them at very crucial sensitive places. |
