Voices of buried haunt Government | TRC likely to come up soon | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 19: Constituting the much awaited Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is now Chief Minister's compulsion. His Government has sought closure of the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) investigation into mass/unmarked graves. The graves were discovered by International Peoples' Tribunal for Peace and Justice in Indian Kashmir (IPTK) in 2008. Accordingly, a report `facts underground' was made public. The report sent shock waves across the globe. The European Union passed a resolution seeking an end to such practices in future. Two years later, the IPTK came out with yet another report on mass/ unmarked graves. This time the SHRC took suo moto cognizance of the report titled `Buried evidence'. The SHRC vindicated the IPTK report early this year causing embarrassment to the Government. Last week the Government sought closure of the SHRC investigation into mass/graves. A Government spokesman said the investigation shall now be entrusted to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). Interestingly the TRC has not been formed till yet. The Chief Minister has very often talked about it but no tangible measures have been taken so far. "Now, the situation is different. The Government has approached the SHRC. In the coming days, the SHRC will close investigation. The people who have discovered the mass/unmarked graves will not allow the issue to die down easily. The Government, therefore, will have to form the TRC in the coming days', said a human rights defender. |
