Citizens Forum alleges corruption in city's water supply | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 20: Citizens Forum has alleged large scale bungling and rampant corruption in supply of drinking water to Jammu city. The forum has stated that a sum of Rs 360 crores sanction by the central government after borrowing the same from Asian Development Bank, about a decade back, for a project to supply water to Jammu city from Chenab river, was diverted by the authorities in setting up Tube Wells and storage tanks as well as laying of some new pipe lines, which did not produced the desired result, since much of the amount was siphoned and pilferaged by the executive agencies. A meeting of the Citizens Forum held here today, under the Chairmanship of its president, R K Chadha has observed that the authorities in the engineering department then took the plea that the Chenab water, having much of silt could not be filtered to provide clean drinking water to the people. But this was a wrong plea, taken only keeping in mind the scope for siphoning the money, since the scope for the same was more than by constructing a dam from the canal from Chenab river and setting up a filtration plant there. Pointing out drawbacks in the works undertaken and being executed through ERA, the forum alleged that ERA and PHE utterly failed to mitigate the problems of people of Jammu. ERA and PHE has never calculated the requirement of water as per population of the Jammu city and what the production of water prior to 2005 was when ERA started its operation. |
