Jammu Muslims pray for secularism, brotherhood | EID CELEBRATIONS | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 20 : Muslims across Jammu and Kashmir celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr with religious fervor and gaiety today and offered special Eid prayers and prayed for "peace and communal brotherhood", in the backdrop of the recent Amaranth land row that had threatened to polarize Hindu and Muslim in the state. A large gathering, led by Maulana Sadar-Ul-Hassan Imam Jamia Masjid Talab Khatikan, here offered prayers at the Jammu Eidgah. Festivals do work wonders in spreading the message of love and harmony. On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fiter today, people from all walks of life and of different religions beliefs took an opportunity to greet their Muslim brethren on this special day. Muslims, though in minority in Jammu province, celebrated Eid with religious fervour and festivity today. The Muslim on the occasion of Eid prayed for "peace and communal brotherhood" in the state. Speaking to a large congregation, the Maulana Sadar-Ul-Hassan said "The region has undergone a lot of communal, regional and social turmoil during recent protests and counter protests in the state. 'We must all get together and work to undo the effects of that and pray for peace and amity", he maintained. "We prayed for peace, communal harmony and brotherhood all around. The recent attempts to create regional and communal divide in the state must be forgotten as a nightmare. We must all walk hand in hand to strengthen the bonds of unity, brotherhood", he added. He also stated that "The festival of Eid teaches us to help the needy and to share each others joy and sorrow. There is nothing like rich or poor in the eyes of Allah. Many Hindus waited outside the Eidgah to greet their Muslim friends after the prayers. Raman Bhalla , Minsiter for Revenue was one among them. "We joined our brothers in prayers for peace and tranquility. Some elements did attempt to create fissures in the communal and regional harmony of the state for sake of petty interests but the need is to isolate these people and look ahead positively", they said. The Muslims after offering prayers hugged the members of other communities who had come to greet them on the occasion of Eid and exchanged pleasantries amongst each other. "It is very encouraging and soothing when people from other communities, respecting our sentiments come and stand outside the mosque just to greet us. This is a perfect example of secularism," said Mustaq Ahmed, while coming out of the Eidgah in Jammu. People who attended Eid prayers at various mosques in Jammu city prayed for the restoration of people in the state. "Though militancy and separatist wave is going on in the state, but we never had a major communal tension and our state has always stood as an example of communal harmony for rest of the country. Police and civil administration had made special security arrangements at various places. Children wearing new clothes and showing off Eidi (money elders give to the young as a token of love on Eid) could be seen on the streets, adding colour and fervour to the solemnity of the occasion. Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Pardeep Gupta , IGP Jammu Zone Dilbagh Singh , SSP Parbhat Singh, DC Jammu Sanjeev Verma and others were also present at the Eidgah to extend their greetings to the Muslim brethren on the occasion. "We have come here to greet our Muslim brothers on the festival of Eid and we pray to almighty God for the early return of peace and prosperity in this troubled torn state of Jammu and Kashmir," said one Sahil Gupta who was standing outside the Eidgah Jammu to greet his friends. The festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm and gusto across the region amidst tight security to prevent any untoward incident. |
