PoK-based trust being used as front to channel terror funds into J&K | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 21: A trust based in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is being used as a front to channel terror funds into Jammu and Kashmir. The money is being pumped into the state for militants (foreign and local) and also for the families of the militants killed by security forces in encounters. "We are aware about the activities of PoK-based Jammu and Kashmir Affectees Relief Fund Trust (JKARFT) and have also zeroed in on some of the suspects working for it on this side of the border," official sources said. "The suspects collect the money from various sources and then take it clandestinely to militants and their handlers," the sources added. Though the money was being sent to the valley in the name of relief and rehabilitation work, it was being used to fund terrorists to keep the waning militancy alive in the state," sources said. Sources said the money was also being distributed by the suspects among the families of the local militants who were gunned down by security forces in encounters with them. The trust was also said to be behind pumping a huge quantity of fake Indian currency into the state through hawala channels, the sources added and said that some of the militant sympathisers, who were suspected to be working for the trust, had been identified. Apart from using hawala channels, the trust was also banking upon the infiltrating militants to act as human couriers for carrying the money to the valley, the sources added. In December last year, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had registered a case against the trust for pumping in Rs 80 cr into the state. The case was initially registered by the NIA against the trust chairman Mehboob Ul Haq and general secretary Masroor Dar, sources said. This was stated to be the first case registered by NIA as regards the cross-border terror funding into Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan. The case was lodged under sections 17, 18, 39 and 40 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The trust and its office bearers were also charged with waging a war against India, the sources added. Sources said the trust was founded in Pakistan over two decades back with the support of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM).
