IGNOU invites applications for PG Diploma in Food Science, Technology | | | Early Times Report Newdelhi, Aug 21: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is offering a new programme viz, Post Graduate Diploma in Food Science and Technology at the School of Agriculture for July 2012 session. The admissions are on and the last date for submission of application form is 10th September, 2012. This is a one year programme offered through online mode while the practical classes will be conducted at IGNOU Campus, New Delhi and in some selected programme study centres. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries has given Rs. 75 lakhs grant-in-aid to the University to establish a Food Processing Lab for running this programme. A laboratory shall be established in the University campus which will be used as a model study centre for conducting the practical classes for the students. The aim of this programme is to develop human resource for the fast growing food processing sector and provide knowledge & technical competencies to address the emerging issues of processing, product development, food safety, marketing, export & sustainable use of resources. Existing technicians, managers, food industry professionals & technologists can also join the programme to strengthen their knowledge & technical proficiencies and to have vertical career mobility. Graduates in Agriculture/Food Technology/ Dairy Technology/ Horticulture/Home Science/ Agriculture Engineering and Science graduates with Chemistry/ Life Science/Biotechnology/Microbiology are eligible for the admission. Students will have the exposure to the food industry since one month hands-on training in the industry is a compulsory component of this programme. This programme will train the students to have jobs as Food Technologist in research and development departments of food processing industries, educational & research institutes; Food Science & Technology professionals in Quality Control/ Quality Assurance Management departments in food/ hospitality/ retail industry and laboratories; Production Executives and Marketing executives in food production industries; and Food Safety Officers in Government regulatory bodies. Besides, this will also encourage the students for self employment as entrepreneurs in dairy; meat, fish and poultry; fruits and vegetables; cereals, pulses and oilseeds processing set-ups.
