Pesticide, related units polluting Samba & its surrounding | | | NEERAJ.BADYAL SAMBA, Aug 21: Locals in Samba are concerned over the alleged degrading of environment due to mushrooming of industrial sector especially related to pesticides in Samba. They say it could be seen positive for generating employment but on then other hand it is taking toll of the ecology of Samba and its surrounding. The industrial area in Samba has two phases, Phase I and II housing approximately 250 factories of different industries but majority of them manufacturing hazardous chemicals. The administration is also planning to develop Phase III, the waste of which would also to be dumped in the river Basantar. Throwing all norms in air, industrial waste of almost all the industries is allegedly dumped in said river once considered as lifeline of Samba city. Locals alleged these industries particularly manufacturing pesticide are reportedly polluting the air and water of the area. "The river Basantar is dying because of constant flow of waste materials coming from the industries without any check, locals alleged. Locals lamented that the villagers living in hamlets situated along the down stream of the river where the water of this river is being used traditionally for agricultural and domestic purposes are facing health problems. "The soil is growing infertile rapidly and animals are dying by constant intake of the polluted water, they added. One of trade union leader on the condition of anonymity maintained that the administration is not taking step on erring factories allegedly with the connivance of the law enforcing agencies. These industries were involved in corrupt practices to save their skin. He also said that these owners of the factories are exploiting labourers by employing them on contract. Some locals also said that due to unhealthy emissions from the factories and wastage from the industries many diseases occurred like skin, lungs, hearing and other respiratory problems. Pertinent to mention that seven buffalos of one Bag Hussain died after consuming contaminated water from a rivulet close to outlet of Industrial Centre Samba. Student leader Kusum Khajuria, Shiv sena leader Ramesh Gupta also raised the issue that many of the industrial units are becoming hazardous after putting aside the set norms to save the ecology of the respective area. |
