Widening of track to Amarnath cave leads to controversy | Widens gulf between NC- Cong | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 21: With National Conference opposing widening of track to holy cave of Swami Amarnath, the differences have surfaced in coalition partners again. The congress which is a coalition partner to NC in the State can't afford to support the contentions of NC leadership over the issue as Party may face stiff opposition in Jammu region where it has the major support base. The Congress leadership which sharply reacted to statement of Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather is of the view raking of Amarnath road widening issue can lead to a 2008 type land row controversy and damage the Party's image so the party leadership has not only distanced itself from NC leader's statement but turned down it outright. According to political analysts' the congress can't support NC's view point in this regard which has taken a pro separatist stance by ruling out the widening of road. The NC opposed the proposal to please its political constituency in Kashmir after the separatist Hurriyat opposed it tooth and nail. The political analysts are of view that both NC and congress are trying to please their political constituencies in the State. While NC is making all its efforts to outwit the separatist Hurriyat and mainstream People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kashmir valley, the Congress has also decided to tread cautiously as the party does not want to lose ground to BJP and NPP in Jammu region who have also taken a tough stance against Hurriyat and NC. The VHP has already warned Government that its any bid to thwart the widening of the track to holy cave of Swami Amarnath will lead to serious consequences. VHP and Shiv Sena Balasahib Thackeray have warned that any attempt to sabotage widening of track would lead to bigger agitation than 2008 land row agitation. Commenting on the classification given by Rather who ruled out widening of track, political analysts are of the view that NC leader should have not raked up the controversy and instead chosen to maintain a silence. |
