Panchayats' empowerment: Sarpanches give "Srinagar Chalo" call as talks fail

Rajouri, Aug 22: Annoyed with the attitude of government officials with them, large number of elected Panches and Sarpanches belonging to Poonch-Rajouri border districts gathered here in border district Rajouri on Wednesday and announced to move towards state's summer capital Srinagar in the first week of September.
Minister of state in government of Jammu and Kashmir Shabir Ahmed Khan also participated in the convention and tried to persuade the agitating sarpanches to avoid protest and Srinagar Chalo March.
However, despite all assurances, Sarpanches announced to move towards Srinagar in the first week of September for large scale protests.
Speaking in the convention, Jammu Kashmir Panchayat Conference convener and Sarpanch Poshana Shafiq Mir said that coalition government in the state of Jammu and Kashmir have deceived them in the name of empowerment and PRIs in the state have been made a defunct institution.
Demanding implementation of amendment of Indian constitution regarding Panchayati Raj in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, Mir said that their struggle will remain continue till Panchayati Raj is not implemented in its letter and spirits in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
Mir said that all claims made by chief minister Omar Abdullah proved nothing more than lip service and his party will definitely reap its fruit.
Holding all political parties equally responsible regarding Panchayati Raj in the state, Journalist turned Sarpanch Sahafiq Mir said that none of the party has cleared its position so far even Congress was also playing double game.
Among other Sarpanches who spoke on the occasion included Darbaar Chowdhary, Maqbool Chowdhary, Mohammad Hanief Jatt, Sanjive Sharma( Mangoo), Kevel Sharma, Vinod Kumar, Raj Kumar, Capt (Retd) Joginder Singh, Bashir Ahmed Malik , Aslam Kohli, Riaz Malik, Jamshed Ahmed, Farooq Ahmed, Mirza Munir, Bader-u-Din Malik, Abdul Qayoom Naik, Haji Riaz, Haji Zamaan Mirza, Vivek Sharma, Haji Khadim Hussain, Raja Akram Khan, Davinder Sharma, Thaker Kamal Singh, Mohammad Ayoub and etc.
