SIT starts probe into rape, murder of deaf and dumb girl after over 3 yrs of incident | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 22: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of police today started probe into the rape and murder of a deaf and dumb girl which took place at Kajiyal in Ramgarh area of Samba near here in June 2009. A marriage function was in progress at Kajiyal on the night of June 13, 2009, when Arti (24), who was deaf and dumb, had gone missing. Her body was recovered from a dry village well the next morning. Police investigation did not make any headway in the case for nearly three years due to the alleged political pressure as the accused were said to be rich and politically well connected. Arti's father Girdhari Lal is a labourer by profession. After he found that the Ramgarh police were dragging their feet in the case, he approached senior police officers, including IGP (Jammu region) and DIG (Jammu range), but all in vain. The poor man then moved the High Court and filed a petition. After hearing the case, Justice JP Singh directed DGP of J&K police on April 25, 2012, to form a SIT to probe into the case. The DGP then formed a 7-member SIT with DIG Jagjit Kumar as its head. Jagjit and other SIT members, including SSP MS Choudhary and DySP Gian Chand Sharma, today visited the victim's family at Kajiyal and recorded the statements of Arti's parents and brother Pappu, police sources said. They also went to the dry well from where Arti's body was recovered, the sources added and said that they also collected some evidence from the spot. The SIT members assured the family that the inquiry into the Arti's rape and murder would be taken to its logical conclusion. In their statement to the SIT, the family suspected that a man and his son, who too lived at Kajiyal, were behind the incident, the sources added. The suspects were earlier associated with National Conference but were now said to be working with BJP. Sources said police were likely to question the suspects in a day or two and record their statements also. After spending about five hours in the village, the SIT members, later, left for Jammu. They were expected to soon visit the village again. |
