Cong strikes pro-Jammu chord | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 22: The Congress has carefully put itself in pre-electioneering mode by giving serious thought about long pending demands of refugees staying in different parts of the Jammu region who have been denied their rights and hold potential to harm party politically. A meeting with no less than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi is an important indication in this regard. The refugees including West Pak refugees and from PoK have been lamenting since '47 for their rights. The West Pak refugees in particular are living like in an alien land with generations as they have not been given their due right because of Art 370. They have been once termed as 'Guests' by the Speaker in the Assembly during a discussion on their plight. It's this attitude of treating people as 'guests' while at the same time recognizing people who have migrated from the State in '47 as genuine citizens of the State has resulted in antagonistic attitude from them. The Kashmir centric dispensation of the State Government has never ever tried to give serious thought to this issue fearing that any step in this direction could be termed as working against the 'Kashmiris" and could hurt any Kashmir centric party politically. It is for this reason that Congress has made a significant step. Even though the number of these refugees may not be politically high but this move could make positive perception in favour of the Cong which could be seen as sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the people especially of Jammu region where the party has major political stakes. The party which had suffered in last Assembly elections on account of Amarnath land row sees a huge politically potential for itself as BJP is in shambles and has been reduced to a pale shadows of what it was in 2008. |
