No politics in Yatra's name please | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 22: What exactly are the Supreme Court directions regarding the facilities to be created for the annual Shri Amarnathji Yatra? According to the State Government, there are no Apex Court directions with regard to construction of any road or infrastructure to the Holy Cave. Alarmed by the growing public debate over the reported directions of the Supreme Court of India with regard to creation of additional facilities for the Yatris by way of laying infrastructure etc. along the Yatra route, the State Government not only made it amply clear that there are no directions from the Supreme Court to construct a road to the Holy Cave, but also stated that it had no intention to construct one even in the future. Of late there has been a growing tendency to politicize this religious pilgrimage with which the faith of millions of devotees is attached. Each year thousands of Yatris brave the vagaries of weather and high altitude to have a glimpse inside the Holy Cave and enrich their spiritual wealth and experience. The State Government is basically a facilitator of the Yatra whose affairs are managed by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) with the State Governor as its ex-officio chairman. Any attempt to play politics with the Yatra can have serious implications both inside and outside the State. The alarming number of deaths of Yatris this year prompted the Supreme Court to take suo moto cognizance and seek reasons for those fatalities. It is neither in the interest of the State Government or the SASB to try and underplay the number of deaths occurring during this year's Yatra. Agreed that these have happened due to natural causes and one does not necessarily have to look for mischief or foul play when identifying the causes for these deaths. Yet we will have to agree that something has been seriously amiss with regard to the overall healthcare scenario along the Yatra route. First of all let us discuss the medical fitness certificates obtained by the Yatris before they undertake the Yatra. These certificates in many cases have been proved to have been falsely issued. How can a known patient of cardiac ailment be allowed to undertake such an arduous journey? There have been known indoors for Yatri patients in hospitals who had medical fitness certificates with them, but admitted to suffering from cardiac ailments since long. The practice of issuing or obtaining a false medical certificate to perform such a holy journey must be immediately stopped. Further, the State Government and the SASB is duty bound to ensure that the Yatris are subjected to scientific acclimatization before they embark on the uphill trek that passes at places through 13500 feet high passes and mountains. Enough healthcare facilities need to be put in place before the next year's Yatra to ensure that the loss of precious human lives due to one or the other reason is prevented. Most important of all, everybody must try and help the smooth conduct of the Yatra and nobody must play politics on the name of the Holy Yatra. Environment should be the concern for all of us and no handful of people should try and win themselves cheap praise by wearing environment batches. How many of such 'deeply worried environmentalists' have actually gone to either Pahalgam or Baltal to help the post Yatra cleansing effort? |
