Public sector bank employees in Jammu observe strike for second day

Jammu, Aug 23: The officers and employees of the public sector banks in Jammu today observed strike for the second consecutive day as part of the two-day nationwide strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions, bank union sources said.
"Banking services remained paralysed in Jammu as clearing operations were shut due to the strike and a large number of ATMs were also not functioning causing inconvenience to the customers, the Bank Employees' Federation, Jammu said in a release.
"In Jammu, all bank offices including that of private sector banks remained closed as the bank employees and officials abstained from work, he said. "All banking transactions have been affected in more than 70,000 branches across the country, a union leader said furrher adding, "clearing operations have been seriously affected and paralyzed.
"All Customer services across the counter in all the bank branches were disrupted. Import and export bills could not be negotiated and stock market operations, money market, foreign exchange market, etc. were also crippled, he said.
Pertinent to mention here that United Forum of Bank Unions comprising of nearly 10 lacks of bank employees and officers belonging to the 9 Bank Unions have given the call for two days nationwide strike from Aug 22-23.
"The striking bankers took out rallies and shouted slogans against the central government demanding scrapping of Khandelwal committee report, Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, outsourcing of banking jobs and for restoration of compassionate appointment scheme, another Bank union leader said.
He said the provisions in Khandelwal Committee report are anti-employee and anti-trade union and are targeted to attack collective bargaining. The union leader said that United Forum of Bank Unions would be meeting shortly to decide on further course of action and intensified programmes including more continuous strikes
