Court awards 7 years rigorous imprisonment to three racketeers

JAMMU, Aug 23 (JNF): Principal Sessions Judge Jammu Jang Bahadur Singh Jamwal today awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment and fine Rs 50,000 to three racketeers involved in the circulation of fake currency notes.
The three accused include Gurmeet Singh alias Kaka, Pardeep Singh alias Kaka and Som Nath. The three have been sentenced after nine years Trial. Principal Sessions Judge Jammu Jang Bahadur Singh Jamwal after hearing both the sides observed that currency counterfeiting is one of the organized white collar crimes which has assumed serious proportions globally. .
Nowadays, counterfeiting of currency notes is done with the help of modern equipment such as colour scanners, colour copiers and printers, as well as by offset process. There has been an upsurge in the incidents of supply of counterfeit Indian currency notes from across the border of India especially from the Indo-Pakistan border and Indo-Nepal border.
During the year 1999, counterfeit Indian currency notes valued at Rs.18.4 million were seized as compared to Rs.6.5 million during 1998 indicating a threefold increase. During the year 1999, the three States of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal accounted for almost 40% of the total seizures. In recent two cases of recovery of counterfeit Indian currency notes which have international ramifications.
The counterfeit notes were of Rs.500 denomination. The consignment had arrived from Dubai by air a couple of weeks ago and the notes were concealed in water dispensers and TV sets. After being smuggled into Mumbai, these were handed over to the Dawood gangsters for circulation. The interrogation of the arrested accused revealed that they worked for Aftab Batki, the case report said.
The police recovered from them a separate consignment of fake currency notes worth Rs.9 million meant to be supplied to certain businessmen in Mumbai. With these observations, Court awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment and fine Rs 50,000 to all the accused.
According to the police case that February 8, 2001 police received an information that at Preet Nagar Digiana, Gurmeet Singh is having fake Indian Currency Notes, which he is using in the market. Upon this information, police raided house of Gurmeet Singh where all the accused persons were present in the room, out of which one Sher Singh succeeded in running away, but rest the accused were arrested and from the possession of Gurmeet Singh Indian Currency Notes of Rs.500 denominations were recovered, whereas, from accused Som Nath one lakh rupees of denomination of Rs.100 were recovered.
Like this, from accused Pardeep Singh Rs.70,000 of the denomination of Rs.100 were recovered and after completion of investigation challan was presented.
