Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 23: Facing the continuous discrimination through the hands of State Government, Ladakhi's may intensify their struggle for grant of Union Territory status to Ladakh region.
According to sources, people in Ladakh feel totally alienated due to discriminative policies of successive State Government's towards the Himalayan region and they have now decided to re-launch the agitation for grant of Union Territory status to Ladakh for the overall development of the region.
Sources said recently a meeting of prominent citizen's of Ladakh has decided to re-activate the activities of Ladakh Union Territory Front (LUTF) and intensify the struggle for the UT status for the region forcefully.
Sources said that people of Ladakh blame the State Government of not providing adequate share of funds to the region for its speedy development to overcome its backwardness. Despite the repeated pleas to the State Government by LUTF from time to time, the Government failed to concede the demand, sources added.
Sources said instead of framing policies to ameliorate the lot of poor Ladakhis, the successive Governments have adopted such policies which impeded the development of the Himalayan region, with the result majority of people in remote areas of the region still live in abject poverty and backwardness after the 66 years of independence. Sources said the intrusion by China in some border areas of Leh has been a cause of concern among the common people who demanded that Central Government should act with full might to safeguard the territory of Ladakh.
Sources said that no proper attention has been paid for development of infrastructure or promotion of adventure tourism in Ladakh division to boost its economy. The region which borders with Tibet (China) and Pakistan faces the threat from both the neighboring countries and misadventure of Pakistan in Kargil still haunts the people of the region, sources said.
"The overall development of the region is only possible after the grant of UT status to region," said Thupstan a social activist from Chuglamsar Leh. He said the demand of the people of region for inclusion of Bhoti language into the eighth schedule of Indian Constitution has not been conceded till date and this way Government was depriving the people of region of their basic rights.
To begin with, the demand for grant of UT status to the region will be raised in BJP State Executive meet scheduled to take place at Udhampur on August 31. During the meet, Ladakhi leaders will turn the attention of party towards the major problems being faced by the people of the region.
The meeting which is likely to be represented by Thupstan Chhewang former MP and Sonam Dorjay another senior leader of the Party from the region will also move a resolution in the meeting in this regard.
