JAMMU, Aug 24: Everester, Ram Singh and Amreen Kousar of Mountaineering Association of J&K today left for Delhi to participate in a national mountaineering expedition to Mount Kamet (7756 m) in Uttrakhand Himalaya. The expedition is being organized by Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi, the apex body for adventure sports in the country. This prestigious mixed expedition, being led by Wing Cdr (Retd) T Sridharan, has eight members including four girls. It shall be organized from August 25 to October six.
Situated at an elevation of 7756m in Chamoli district of Garhwal region in Uttrakhand state, Mount Kamet is the third highest peak in India and 29th highest peak in the world. While attempts to climb Kamet began in 1855 it was ultimately climbed in the 11th attempt in 1931 by a British expedition led by Frank Smyth and became the first peak over 25000ft to be successfully summited in 1931. "The Indian mountaineers were first introduced to the peak in 1952 but were successful only after three years in 1955 when Late Major Nandu Jayal scaled it in his third attempt. Now it is a very popular peak with Indian climbers especially as a run up to the Everest expeditions," general secretary of the Association, Ram Khajuria told SAN. Earlier, in a simple function, organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K at its office, Ram Singh was given an emotional send off. All the members wished him best of luck and success for the expedition. It may be recalled that Ram Singh Slathia is an ace climber of J&K who has scaled many formidable peaks including the Everest and Shivling and Amreen Kousar is also an experienced climber presently working as an instructor in Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Pahalgam.
