2/6/2007 10:30:49 PM
JAMMU FEB-06
Police today resorted to lathi charge to disperse the students who were protesting outside the GGM Science College here against the alleged discrimination with Jammu region. Students from MAM College also joined the protestors.
The demonstrators led by the President Jammu Joint Students Front Pushvinder Singh and Gautam Singh of MAM College boycotted the classes and staged a protest demonstration outside the college premises. The protesting students blocked the road disrupting the smooth flow of vehicular traffic on Jewel-Talab Tiloo and Akhnoor routes. The agitating students marched towards the Civil Secretariat and enroute the Police pursued them to disperse. To stall their march towards the Civil Secretariat, the Police resorted to cane charge; as a result some students are reported to have received some minor injuries. Later, the demonstrators dispersed without causing any much problem.
The demonstrators have alleged that Jammu region was given a raw deal and discriminated in different spheres during the last nearly six decades. They threatened to boycott classes till the political and developmental imbalance with Jammu region is not done away with. The protestors demanded creation of Assembly seats for Jammu region at par with the Kashmir valley and equal distribution of funds for development of tourism and other sectors.
‘Warning that discrimination with Jammu region would not be allowed’, the student leaders alleged that out of Rs.24 crore Central plan for development of tourism in the
State, a whooping sum of Rs.20 crore has been allocated to Kashmir and just Rs.4 crore for the Jammu region.
Earlier, the agitating students ransacked the Principal’s office and broke the furniture and other fixtures.
