5 killed, 9 injured in rain-related incidents in J&K

JAMMU/KATHUA, Aug 25: Five people, including three women, were killed and nine others injured in rain-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
A woman and her two children were buried alive and five others were injured when their house today collapsed due to heavy rains in Barmeen village at Udhampur district, police said.
Two women were washed away in flash floods triggered by heavy rains in Kathua district, they said, adding that the bodies have been fished out.
Four persons were injured when a house caved in due to intermittent rains at Soit village in Rajouri district, police said. Several inter-district roads have been blocked for vehicular traffic in view of landslides triggered by heavy downpours, which also caused flooding of Chenab, Ujh, Basantar and Tawi rivers. Meanwhile, one person was killed and four others injured when a house collapsed due to heavy rains here this morning. The rains wrecked havoc across Kathua with the town presenting a lake like view. All roads and drains are waterlogged and Basohli-Kathua road got blocked causing inconvenience to the people.

The underground drainage and sewerage system has collapsed completely. The entire area gets submerged with a light shower and open manholes add to the woes. "Lack of maintenance has led to a complete breakdown of the underground drainage system. A short spell of rain and the entire Kathua gets submerged.
The underground sewerage channels have broken down as a result of which sewage water flows on the road thus endangering life.
