Kishtwar being covered under Centrally sponsored saffron Mission

JAMMU, Aug 26: Following reports that large chunks of land under saffron cultivation in south Kashmir, particularly in Pampore-Ladhu belt in the valley, being converted into housing colonies the state Government has started laying emphasis on development and promotion of saffron cultivation and production in Kishtwar district in the Jammu region.
If the state Government earmarked Rs. 3.22 crores for saffron development in Kishtwar last year it has decided to bring Kishtwar belt under centrally sponsored Saffron Mission.This st ep is being taken to make up for any loss of saffron production in the Kashmir valley.
Explaining it the Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir has said that an area of 3665 hectares have been covered under National Saffron Mission in Saffron growing areas of Kashmir Division and 120 hectares in Saffron growing area of Kishtwar in Jammu Division. Further, he said, 435 hectares in Saffron growing areas of Kashmir Division and 20 hectares in Kishtwar area of Jammu Division have been covered under the component rejuvenation/ replanting under the mission during 2011. According to Mir an area of 1000 hectares is expected to be covered during 2012 in Saffron growing areas of Kashmir Division and 40 hectares envisaged for rejuvenation in Kishtiwar area of Jammu Division. He has said that the Saffron Development Project is for 372.18 crores to be implemented over a period of 4 years, 2010-11 being the first year. He said Rs. 288.06 crores will be provided by the Government of India in four years and Rs 84.122 crores shall be the farmers' share. The year wise allocation under the Mission shall be provided by the government of India. Since Saffrohas tremendous potential the Government plans to utilize the services of the scientists of SKUAST for improving the quality of Kishtwar saffron so that its achieves Pampore type grade.
