Move unlikely to fructify until two Cong factions 'settle' on names | Cabinet reshuffle, expansion talk gaining momentum again….? | | Early TImes Report
Jammu, Aug 26: Even as the speculations about cabinet reshuffle and expansion of Omar Abdullah ministry are doing rounds once again, the entire exercise which is pending with the coalition partners may not happen until the two factions of the Congress arrive at some consensus on the choice of at least two leaders to be inducted in the cabinet against two vacancies that have fallen vacant that were given to party at the time of formation of government. Sources said following pressure from its alliance partner at the local level for some time for effecting reshuffle and expansion of the cabinet, even though the Chief Minister has showed his inclination , this exercise may hit the roadblock again due to reasons for which Congress is itself responsible. Sources said since the two factions led by Ghulam Nabi Azad as well as Prof Saif-uDin Soz are not looking eye to eye with each other on all key matters pertaining to party and its role in governance as major ally, they are posing stiff resistance to the names proposed by either group. The stalwarts of the two factions strongly vying for people from their own camps to be inducted as ministers at least against the vital portfolios of R&B and Education, sources added. As for the third ministry, which also has to go to Congress, the 'stalwart' heads of two factions are not staking stronger claims for own candidates and have left this matter to be decided by the high command only. They have not even discussed the matter formally or informally , notwithstanding the fact that the contenders in the list from either side are pestering and desperate for this pending exercise to be accomplished now at the earliest. Amid the war of nerves between the two factions, there are remote chances of reaching any consensus on the names , sources within the party said adding that it was this tug of war which was dragging the exercise further and NC or Chief Minister is not entirely to be blamed for the delay. It is pertinent to mention that the Congress leaders at the local level have been complaining of party getting a raw deal at the hands of ruling NC over this issue contending that Congress is at receiving end in further deferring the reshuffle and expansion of cabinet. Apart from the vital portfolios of R&B and Education which were with Congress and fell vacant due to 'unsavoury 'reasons , one seat is lying unfilled from the Congress quota since the day of formation of government, in terms of number of ministers from both the alliance partners. Sources also said that NC leadership is neither in hurry to go ahead with the exercise nor can afford to do it on its own for Congress ministries. As there is only vacancy that has to be filled from NC , the high command may not show any interest for its single ministerial berth even if Congress decides so for its three portfolios. The reason attributed by sources within the NC is that all the contenders for sole NC berth are very senior leaders of the party and picking up one from at least five such contenders is a very difficult task for the high command. |
