gcW organizes 'plantation drive' | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Kathua, Aug 28: Social Foresty Division Kathua has celebrated "Van Mahotsav at Govt College for Women Kathua by launching plantation drive and orgainzing a symposium on 'Van Mahotsav' and significance of afforestration. Speaking on the occasion DC Kathua Zahidha Khan who was chief guest on the occasion emphasized on the importance of people's participation in afforestation programmes and conservation of forests. Referring climatic change across the globe chief guest underlined the need to conserve the forest and ecology of surrounding. She also exhorted the gathering to play active role in afforestation campaign to enhance the forest cover in state which will proportionally play significant role in checking the sudden climatic changes under global warming. Earlier Divisional Forest Officer Social Forestry Division Kathua Ghulam Nabi in his address said that annual tree planting festival" celebrated through out the country in the month of July and onset of monsoon. He stressed on the role of forests in maintenance of ecological balance and the need for raising awareness among masses in this regard. He said that till date 349679 plants have been planted and distributed resulting from tree planting, in an area of about 449.57 hectares under different models like farm forestry and afforestation of degraded forests, "Around 39 Village Forest Committees have been constituted under the Joint Forest Management Programme of Social Forestry for their active role in afforestation drive, he added. Guest of honour principal of Women Govt Degree College also spoke on the occasion. On the occasion different ornamental trees plants were planted by the students of the college and college students and later they also expressed their concerns over the importance of Van Mahotsav and plants on planet earth.
