Army today is one of the most committed institutions in India | Danger Not From Outside, says Gen Singh | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 29: Anarchy is prevailing in India. The people across the country have lost confidence in the political class. They have no faith in the law-making bodies, including the Parliament. They have come to believe that there is none in the Congress-led UPA Government who is prepared to listen to them and devise policies which suit them. They are even accusing the powers-that-be in the States and at the Centre of looting and plundering public money and exploiting the country's natural resources, including coal and spectrum. The general view is that the civil society has no place in the official scheme of things and that the persons at the helm have manipulated things in their own favour. At the same time, however, they have full faith in the institution of Army, Supreme Court of India, Comptroller and Auditor-General and Election Commission. All these institutions are up in arms against the political establishment. These are the institutions which are trying their best to make the establishment deliver as per the Constitutional requirements. It is the C&AG which has exposed scam after scam and brought the Congress-led UPA Government to the nation's knees. It is the Supreme Court which asserted its authority and forced the Central Government to act against those involved in the multi-crore 2G spectrum scam. It is the Election Commission which has been putting its foot down from time to time to ensure free and fair polls. Take, for example, the manner in which the Election Commission took on two Central Ministers Salman Khurshid and Beni Prasad Verma during the last Assembly elections in UP. They had vitiated the whole election scene by challenging the very authority of the Election Commission. Our Prime Minister and a number of his colleagues did the same two days back. So much so, the Prime Minister questioned the C&AG on the floor of the Lok Sabha itself. The Army, like the above-mentioned institutions, plus bulk of the media, including electronic media, is one institution whose contribution has been splendid. The Indian Army is known the world over for its commitment, dedication, discipline, spirit of supreme sacrifice and its humane approach. It maintains calm even if the provocation is grave. At the same time, it discharges its duty to the best of its ability and capacity. It doesn't take any chance. Its contribution has been spectacular despite the fact that there are elements who apply brakes to keep certain constituency pleased. Its contribution to the defence of India and its role in the 1947-48, 1965, 1971 and 1999 wars as well as in tackling the Pakistan-sponsored low-intensity proxy war will be written in golden words in the modern history of India. It would be only appropriate to say that India is safe because the Army is ever alert and vigilant. Indeed India has produced Generals who would be remembered for all the times to come for providing effective, inspiring and skillful leadership and protecting and promoting the territorial integrity of India. Even the former Army Generals have been serving the country in their own way by exposing the weaknesses and drawing attention of the authorities to the undesirable elements. Only yesterday, former Army chief Gen VK Singh, who has been taking interest in social work as well after his superannuation, spoke very candidly on the prevailing situation. It was he who exposed the rot. Addressing the Kisan Mitar Sangharash Sabha at Deoband, UP, he said the real danger to India is not from other countries. "The real danger to India is from the enemy within," he said. What he said meant many things. He also said that the well-being, all round development and prosperity of the country depend on the Army and agrarian community. He urged the people to remember Lal Bahadur Shastri's inspiring slogan "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan". This shows how committed are our soldiers. |
