Civic elections may test Omar's strength, stature | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 1: Intelligence inputs received by the Government indicate that majority of people in Jammu and Kashmir may not respond fully to the call for boycott of the Municipal elections. Official sources said that on the basis of these inputs Chief Minister, Omar Abdulah, has announced that the civic elections and those in the block development councils were to be held in December. One report said that when the Chief Minister was asked whether December was the right season for any election he is said to have stated that when the Assembly poll could be held in December why the civic elections cannot be held in December. Police sources said that separatists, especially those belonging to the camp of hardliners led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, have revived their plan to secure peoples' response to the call for boycott. In fact more than five months ago Geelani and his associates have given a call to people to stay away from participation in the civic elections. However, the Government circles believe that the call for boycott could evoke some response within the valley but in two other regions, Jammu and Ladakh, they expect heavy polling. The Congress and the National Conference have yet to decide whether they would contest the elections on party basis and if they decide so the two will sit together to find out if the two could contest it jointly or separately. After heavy polling registered in the Panchayat elections last year Omar will be on test to demonstrate his political vigour which he can do if the ensuing civic elections received full participation from the people. |
