Despite his complicity estabilshed at outset, Kasab was given every opportunity of defence | Mumbai terror attack | | Bharat Bhushan Jammu, Sept 1: Though Kasab's complicity in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack was established at the very outset, he was given every opportunity of defence, including a lawyer, by the Union Government. A special court had sentenced him to death. Now, when the Supreme Court has upheld the lower court verdict, a possible strike by the Pak-based terror outfits to avenge his death was not ruled out. In view of these apprehensions, the Indian security agencies must not become complacent, a senior police officer said. The terror outfits could plan yet another attack on any Indian city on or before the day he was sent to gallows, he added. While any Indian city could become their target, in the hitherto militancy affected J&K, the inaccessible areas of the mountain-locked districts of Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Reasi, Rajouri and Poonch seemed to be more vulnerable, the officer added. As there was a very thin presence of police, or security forces in all such areas, militants could be benefitted from it. To flush them out, there was an emergent need of launching combing operations, he said. Random ambushes and consistent search operations would keep the militants on the run. While running for shelter, they would not get time to carry out innocent killings to avenge the Kasab's hanging, he added. Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist caught alive in the aftermath of the 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai has been found guilty of 80 out of 86 charges. "After his conviction, we ought to be prepared for a possible retaliation. Pakistan's professed determination to stop the proliferation of terror from its soil is nothing more than lip service, and the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is testimony to this fact," the officer said. Under these circumstances, there was no room for complacency while addressing internal security challenges, he asserted. |
