Jammu Kerala Samaj celebrates 'Onam Fiesta' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 2: Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Raman Bhalla today welcomed the celebration of 'Onam Fiesta' - a seasonal festival of Kerala in Jammu, saying that such events exhibiting the culture of other states help in promoting people to people contact, exchange of culture and foster a sense of nationalism among the people of the country. Speaking at the concluding function of 'Onam Fiesta' organised by Kerla Samaj Jammu in the premises of St. Pauls Convent School, Gangyal, here today, the Minister said that Jammu was fasting emerging as a confluence of many cultures as people from across the country are living here in harmony and peace. Bhalla extended Onaas hmaskal to the community and said Onam Fiesta is basically the harvest fiesta of the Malayalees and is mythically related to the Malayalee-Hindu legends. The Minister said that the activities during the 10-day festival like arranging colorful blossoms for pookalam, visiting temples, gifting new clothes (Onakkodi) to everybody, feasting on 'avial', 'pappadum' and 'payasams' on plantain leaves and indulging in elating boat races in the azure backwaters, sports and other cultural activities like `Oonjalattom, Thiruvathirakali and so on back in Kerela depicts the rich culture of that state. He said observance of Onam in Jammu would definitely help the people here to know more about the people of Kerala. |
