Azad wrecked our proverbial harmony, says Dorjay | | | ET REPORT JAMMU, Sept 2: BJP leader and former chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, Chering Dorjay, has come down heavily on Union Health Minister and former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and charged him with causing schism in the Ladakhi society. "Events (in Ladakh) lead to an unavoidable inference that Ghulam Nabi Azad had a hand in wrecking our proverbial harmony. He had weaned away the more ambitious from amongst us (read Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora and his associates). Soon after assuming the office of Chief Minister of J&K, he started sabotaging the duly elected LUTF (Ladakh Union Territory Front) council. He used our local Congress leaders as stooges," he has written in his political essay "UT for Ladakh: Time has come for introspection", which was published in the latest issue of "Border Affairs". Border Affairs is published from New Delhi. Its editor is Pushp Saraf, a keen J&K-watcher. To prove his point, Dorjay gave two specific examples. One: "Mr Azad's Government sabotaged the 2008 opening ceremony of the Sindhu Darshan Festival by blocking all routes leading (up) to the venue. I was the chief guest on the occasion but was denied the honour of hoisting the national flag. A lower rank officer of police had hoisted the national flag even before I reached the venue which I had done in time in consistent with the need for the punctuality to be maintained on such occasions. The Azad Government had deliberately chosen to humiliate the post of chairman/CEC and the LUTF in utter disregard of the fact that the council was an elected body and deserved full respect. Moreover, chairman/CEC held the rank of a Cabinet Minister that placed him high in the protocol list. The Government in Srinagar had then picked up the Senior Superintendent of Police of Leh as a tool to carry out its wicked design against us and the police officer had no qualms of conscience while behaving like an extra constitutional authority. The Sindhu Darshan Festival is organized every year for 3 days starting from June 3 to promote tourism and strengthen national integration with financial support from the Union Tourism Ministry. I seized the first opportunity to give vent to my anger and anguish at the closing ceremony of the festival at Leh's Polo Ground. Mr Azad and Ambika Soni, then the Union Tourism Minister, were present on the spot. What was their reaction? Ms Soni said this should not have happened and the chairman/CEC should be shown respect due to him". Two: "What Mr Azad's Government went on to do was even more shocking. Many of our active workers and councillors were arrested on fabricated charges and physically tortured in Leh police station. It extended the tenure of the SSP Leh to three years from the normal two years to send a message to us that it would continue to terrorise us". Dorjay did not stop just there. He further wrote: "There was no doubt that the ploy was to bully us into submission. While all of us were chosen to be harassed and terrified in one way or the other Thupstan Cheewang, the main leader of the LUTF, was targeted and subjected to all sorts of baseless personal allegations in a bid to besmirch his high clean public profile. Mr Azad's Government left little doubt that it wanted to finish Mr Chhewang and the LUTF Politically. It succeeded in the 2008 Assembly polls when employing unfair means and misusing Government machinery it triggered the defeat of Mr Chhewang at the hands of Mr Jora. Mr Azad's agenda was to split the Buddhist leadership of Ladakh and he seemed to complete it". These are some of the charges Dorjay levelled against Ghulam Nabi Azad. Dorjay is a victim and what he wrote explains everything. One can understand the reasons behind the hostile attitude of the NC leadership and other Kashmiri leaders towards the LUTF and the LAHDC, but one fails to understand why Azad in the words of Dorjay "wrecked our (Ladakhi) proverbial harmony".
