Kamaal takes on Congress, questions its credibility | Coalition Of Contradictions | | Neha JAMMU, Sept 3: NC additional general secretary and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's uncle, Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, who is known for his Congress-bashing, once again tore into the Congress leadership and threatened that the NC would severe its ties with the coalition partner if it continues to attack the Omar Abdullah-led Government. He mocked, ridiculed and exposed the Congress while addressing party workers in Rajouri. "The Congress-NC alliance is under threat in the State due to the policies and politics being played by the former. Our workers are being ignored and harassed by Congress Ministers and if this trend continues, we will have no hesitation in snapping our ties with the party", he told reporters after holding meeting of party workers. What he said was unbelievable. There is only Congress Minister who has the guts to take on the NC and he is none other than Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora. He does from time to time assert and act independently. As for the other Congress Ministers, there is hardly any one among them who has the courage to ignore the NC and its workers and supporters. Anyway, Kamaal said so for reasons best known to him and what he said was not that significant. He has been saying again and again for political reasons and keep the NC supporters in good humour. What was really significant was his comment on the ongoing Youth Congress-sponsored movement directed against the Government. He was commenting on the movement unleashed by the Youth Congress for making the State Government adopt 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments to bring the State Panchayati Raj Act at par with the national Panchayati Raj Act so that the Panchayats and Panches and Sarpanches are empowered to meet the people's needs at the grassroots level. "The Congress is…misleading people in the name of panchayat empowerment and is indulging in gimmicks. The Panchayati Raj Act was passed by the State Legislature and three budget sessions have been held in last three years. Why the Congress legislators kept mum over the issue in the Assembly during all these years?" The demand of implementation of 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments and the road shows being organised by Youth wing of Congress are only aimed at defaming the Government and generate public outcry. I do not feel that the party high command has approved the programme of Youth Congress but they are doing it on their own, thus indicating a divide within the party," he said while exposing the State Congress leadership. Kamaal can be criticized on many counts, but one will have to give credit to him for his plain-speaking on the issue. It is true that the Congress Ministers have hardly spoken on the issue after the elections to the Panchayats were held some 20 months ago. They are part of the Cabinet and had they raised the issue in the Cabinet meetings, the needful had been done long ago. It would be only proper to say that the Youth Congress is only playing politics over the issue and that the Congress has been playing a double-role. Inside the Assembly, it keeps mum and outside it, it has been enacting farcical dramas. |
