Amitabh gets Rolls Royce for performance in 'Eklavya'
2/7/2007 11:58:20 PM
MUMBAI, JAN 7
Expressing gratitude to Amitabh Bachchan for his "stunning" performance in the yet-to-be-released "Eklavya", the film's director Vidhu Vinod Chopra today gifted the actor a Rolls Royce Phantom worth Rs 3.5 crore.
The silver car was presented by Chopra to the Bollywood icon at the latter's Janak office in northwest Mumbai's Juhu suburb.
" Bachchan's performance is simply stunning in 'Eklavya' and I felt such an accomplished performance deserves an extra special acknowledgement and what better than a Rolls Royce for a person who has a passion for cars," Chopra said.
Asked for his reaction, Bachchan said, "I am over the moon. I wanted to work with Vidhu for a long time and this finally happened after a long wait of 30 years."
When Bachchan was asked to compare his turn in "Eklavya" with that in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Black", as both directors had touted his performance in their respective films as the best, he said, "I have realised why Sanjay is a perfectionist, because he worked under Vidhuji for eight years."
Commenting on media reports that he had presented his son Abhishek a Bentley on his birthday on February 5, Bachchan said, "I have not gifted the Bentley to him."
Chopra and Bachchan have not worked together in the past three decades and "Eklavya", featuring an ensemble cast that includes Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Vidya Balan will hit the screens on February 16.
Asked about the decision to gift the car to Bachchan, Chopra said, "Actually it took shape from a joke during the shoot. While shooting in Rajasthan, Bachchan jokingly said, 'Since now I have done this movie you need to gift me a car.'
"This struck me. I thought I should give a royal present to the royal guard who thrilled me with his performance in the movie. And what better gift than a Rolls Royce for this accomplished performance?"
Chopra described "Eklavya" as a contemporary action thriller about a loyal guardian whose duty is to protect the erstwhile royal family of Devigarh in Rajasthan.
Asked if he plans to cast Bachchan in his third film in the Munnabhai series, Chopra said, "We can see Bachchan in a trailer shot for the third Munnabhai sequel."
