Boycott of former interlocutors was almost complete | | | RUSTAM JAMMU, Sept 4: Two former interlocutors, Dilip Padgaonkar and Radha Kumar, who were on an official six-day visit to Jammu & Kashmir, yesterday flew back to New Delhi. They went back empty handed. In Kashmir, they faced the wrath of those whom they met with. The NC leaders, including a couple of Ministers, did accord them a warm welcome for reasons not really difficult to fathom. One of the reasons was the former interlocutors' positive attitude to the autonomy demand as put forth by the NC. Others who met with them did not appreciate them. In fact, they tore into them, saying their report did not address the larger issue: Kashmir issue. They described as futile the interlocutors' exercise. In Jammu, Dilip and Radha suffered more humiliations. None, barring a few retired University Professors and others, welcomed them. All the political parties, which are active in Jammu, boycotted them. Some local Congress leaders did meet them knowingly which way the wind was blowing in Jammu Pradesh. They knew it fully well that their meeting with them would boomerang and isolate them and still they decided to meet with them. But their meeting with the former interlocutors was not that significant. They did what their masters in Kashmir and New Delhi wanted them to do. They appreciated the interlocutors exercise, saying their work would go a long way in tackling the issues facing the state. That the local NC leaders did not meet with the former interlocutors is a riddle. The only unexpected development was perhaps the meeting between the former interlocutors and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The BSP leadership had criticized the former interlocutors a number of times. They have said the Delhi-appointed interlocutors didn't consider their views on the state and that they rejected their two demands -- abrogation of Article 370 and trifurcation of the state. As for the Jammu youth, it did all that it could to frustrate what they called the "evil designs" of the visiting former interlocutors. What they did is too well-known and, hence, it is hardly necessary to reflect on what could be described as their direct action against them. Suffice it to say that the police have lodged a number of FIRs against them at the behest of the humiliated interlocutors, especially Dilip who demanded legal action against the protesting youth. Remember, Dilip and Radha had to flee from the venue of interaction. The Chief Minister, who had thrown their weight behind Dilip and Radha, reportedly took personal interest in ensuring that certain youth are booked on the charge that they took recourse to unconstitutional methods to register their protest. What happened in Jammu was very significant. Equally significant was the hostile attitude of the two premier representative associations of Jammu. Bar Association Jammu and the other Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Both the associations under their leadership boycotted Dilip and Radha and yet again established that they will never let down Jammu Pradesh and that they will do what suits the country and their Pradesh. The decision to boycott the Dilip and Radha should not surprise anyone. They did what was expected of them. The moral of the story is that the people of Jammu Pradesh have shown Dilip and Radha their rightful place. And this is what Jammu Pradesh is known for. It has been relentlessly fighting against secessionism since 1947. And there are potent reasons to believe that it will never allow the secessionists and fanatics to succeed in their sinister game plan. Dlip and Radha must have felt the Jammu pulse. |
