Election 2014- New Delhi vying for a new political formation | 'PDP still relevant, viable alternative' | | Bashir Assad Srinagar, Sept 4: Describe it the re-alignment of political forces, or a couple of constituents of Hurriyat Conference recognizing the democratic process, any political process, with 2014 General Assembly elections in sight, will fail to take-off without the the involvement of different shades on opinions including separatists. However, the stark reality one could foresee is that the 2014 elections for Jammu and Kashmir Legislative assembly will be significant and historical in many ways. Some observers believe that a section of APHC, by showing its willingness to work along with the NC and PDP, is readying to participate in the 2014 assembly elections but the million dollar question remains whether government of India is ready to ensure a political space for them?. And can India afford an election without involving separatists in Jammu and Kashmir?. A fresh debate is expected in coming months as observers have started drawing inferences from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's recent statement on AFSPA that the law will go during his regime. According to some observers, if at all, consensus evolves among all the stakeholders on revocation of AFSPA, Government of India will definitely negotiate it with separatists in order to provide them a political space and ensure their participation in democratic process. "The political and democratic process in Kashmir remains incomplete without the participation of the separatists. But this time both New-Delhi and separatists are driven by certain compulsions, both have to walk extra -mile to accommodate each other. New-Delhi has to give sanctity to the democratic process while as the very political survival of separatists is at stake" a renowned political commentator told Early Times. According to him participation of separatists is not a debatable, what should be the contours of a political process is the moot point. Engagement with separatists followed by their participation in the 2014 Assembly elections, while leaving wide open the outline of any future constitutional arrangement, may suit well New Delhi's interests. New Delhi by seeking to involve the separatists in the electoral process envisages tackling the problem of alienation. Yet another Kashmir watcher said the involvement of separatists without defining the contours of new constitutional scheme of things will never serve the purpose. It connotes, said he, to dealing with separatists without effectively addressing the problem of separatism. "Managing the separatists without attending to the problem of separatism in the end only discredits the few individuals and this kind of arrangement only widens the gulf between Srinagar and New Delhi," he told Early Times. However, some reports suggest that New-Delhi is vying for a non-PDP and Non-NC arrangement in Jammu and Kashmir and if sources are to be believed New-Delhi has identified a good number of leaders from National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party and Hurriyat Conference and other fringe groups like that of Hakim Mohammad Yasin, Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, Ghulam Hassan Mir, Sajad Gani Lone and Engineer Rashid besides some heavy weights from Jammu region which include old horses of Congress and National Conference to form a broad based government, accommodating different shades and opinions aimed to address the discontent. But if the popular mood in Kashmir is an indication Mufti's Peoples Democratic Party is undeniably well ahead of all and it is this public mood that PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, only the other day, declared formation of next Government in Jammu and Kashmir be her party after 2014 elections. According to observers though accommodating different shades in a compulsion for New Delhi yet it cannot ignore the relevance of PDP under the emerging political scenario in Jammu and Kashmir.
