Jammu, Sept. 4: In order to crack down on the alleged nexus between doctors and private diagnostic laboratories to fleece the poor patients, about 288 doctors including HoDs of GMC and SMGS hospitals and 4 major diagnostic laboratories have been identified by the committee of officers constituted by government for the purpose.
The list is reportedly all set to submit before Chief Minister Secretariat for further action while the process was on, the Deputy Medical Superintendent SMGS Hospital under order No SMGSH/PA/12/26878, demanding action against alleged illegal labs namely Sharma Lab, Life Care Lab, Dr Lal Lab and Shree Lab, outside SMGS Hospital Jammu lodged a complaint to DC Jammu stating that these labs are looting poor patients admitted in the hospital. "The matter is under investigation, sources said.
The said crackdown started following number of complaints received by the government that some doctors referred patients to particular laboratories to get handsome commission in return. Soon after receiving complaints Divisional Commissioner Jammu wrote a letter to state's intelligence agency for verification.
The investigation agency vide order No CID/SS/D-7/2011/PG dated 27 October, 2011 in its report made clear that some senior consultants posted in Government Medical College, Jammu in connivance with medical shops/clinics located in Jammu city are insisting or recommending patients to some selective clinics to undergo costly tests like Ultra Sound, CT Scan and MRI.
The investigative agency has identified the clinics namely as Trikuta Clinic near Shakuntla Theatre, Bhatia Clinic, Bakshi Nagar, Health Care Centre Bakshi Nagar. The investing agency, suggesting to dismantle illegal nexus between doctors and laboratories, further stated that the tests could be conducted in GMC on nominal charges. The under privileged people who cannot afford these tests from open market are thus exploited. The administration may need to intervene and ensure judicious use of men and machinery available in the hospital.
After receiving report beyond belief i.e. a huge list of 288 doctors having an alleged nexus with diagnostic labs in Jammu city, Divisional Commissioner under Order No 301/782/LO/598 directed District Magistrate Jammu to take necessary action and sent the report. Meanwhile sources further said that based on the direction a high level meeting comprising of officers of Controller Drug and Food Organization, Director Health Services, Chief Medical Officer Jammu and other higher officers was held and a committee was constituted for the purpose which seized the records from the laboratories mentioned above.
