JU raises retirement age of teachers to '60 years, 5 months'!
9/6/2012 12:05:18 AM

JAMMU, Sept 5: At a time when employees of the State Government are fighting a long drawn battle seeking a raise in their age of superannuation, Jammu University has arbitrarily raised the retiring age for its teachers by five months by misusing the statutes.
While employees of the State Government retire at the age of 58, the university teachers who retire at 60 are invariably being given an extension of five months in misinterpretation of the statute according to which, a teacher retiring in the middle of an academic session may be granted an extension of a maximum of five months to enable him to complete the syllabus of his subject. "This has become a norm in the university to grant an extension of five months to every retiring teacher even if he retires after the completion of the academic session," said an officer of the university pleading anonymity. "No mental exercise is done to find out if the teacher in question was even taking any classes," he added. It is pertinent to mention here that Prof. Ashok Aima of the department of Management Studies and Prof. Rajiv Gupta of the Chemistry department were awarded extensions after retiring even though none of them was taking any classes and were holding only administrative positions. A coach of the department of Physical Education also was granted extension even as he retired after the end of the academic session.
University teachers draw huge salaries and with their monthly salary cheques in six figures, an arbitrary extension of five months for every retiring teacher is a huge loss to the exchequer; besides such extensions promote adhocism and block opportunities for the promising eligible youth.
"Already opportunities are shrinking for the young academicians who contemplate a career as university teachers and on top of that those who retire after serving for decades are granted extensions without any deliberations," said Dr Vikas Sharma, president NSF. "Not just the Jammu University, the Central University which was opened after so much of struggle by the youth has become a rehabilitation centre for the retired teachers of Jammu University who are being employed at the age of 64," he added.
