No intention to tamper JK's demography: Govt | 500 cases for issuing PRCs to non-residents were brought to my notice: Hakeem | | ET Report SRINAGAR, Sept 6: In an attempt to clear the air on the latest accusations of altering the demography of the State aimed at diluting the Muslim Majority Status of J&K by certain separatist leaders, the State Government today rejected the allegations. "Nobody from outside the State has been or would be allowed to settle here illegally", Minister for Revenue Raman Bhalla told a local news agency, adding if any cases of issuance of 'fake' PRCs to any non -resident are brought to his notice, he would get them probed thoroughly. "We don't have any plans to tamper with the demography of the State. If any non resident has been issued any State Subject Certificate, the matter will be probed thoroughly", asserted Bhalla, whose Ministry is responsible for issuing the State Subject Certificates to the permanent residents of the State. Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla said that a high level empowered committee has been set up to look into the matter. Interestingly, the statement contradicts with what the former Revenue Minister and sitting MLA, Hakeem Mohammad Yasin said. "When I was the Revenue Minister during Mufti Mohammad Syeed regime, cases of issuance of 500 such illegal certificates had come to my notice, out of which 137 were quashed by me," claimed Hakeem. He, however, expressed ignorance about the fate of rest of the cases. He said an Enquiry Commission (Parray Commission) had been set up to probe the cases. He expressed ignorance regarding the findings of the Commission. "I don't know whether the report was later submitted or not," asserted Hakeem, who urged the Government to clear the doubts in minds of people on the issue. Meanwhile, Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) while reiterating its demand of complete abolition of the Article 370, that guarantees a special status to Jammu and Kashmir in Indian Constitution, said that it (BJP) supports any move that aims to settle the non residents in the State. "PRC's are being issued to every citizens of the country at any place. Why shouldn't they (Non JK resident's) be issued State Subjects here?," asked the BJP State president Shamsher Singh. Pertinently Syed Ali Shah Geelani along with other separatist leaders have been accusing the Government of attempting to change the demography of the Muslim Majority State by issuing PRC's to the non JK citizens, thus helping them to settle down in the State. "They want them to settle here so that its Muslim Majority status is compromised." Syed Ali Shah Geelani had alleged during a press conference last week. Meanwhile, United Jihad Council chairman Syed Salah-u-din had also voiced the same concern. |
