BGSBU again shut, teaching faculty on strike | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Sept 6: Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) Rajouri is shut from the last three days with teaching faculty again raising banner of revolt against the University administration. Sources said that the teaching faculty has been observing strike from the last three days. They added that fearful of facing the anger of administration, teaching faculty has preferred not to demonstrate out in the open. They have stuck work and decided not to resume work until the Chancellor of the University, who is Chief Minister Omar Abdullah does not take note of their plight. Faculty members are annoyed over the manner in which their genuine agreed demands are being ignored and they are being made to suffer. Irked over whimsical attitude of university administration especially Vice-Chancellor Prof. Irshad Hamal, sources said that faculty members have decided to resign enmass. They maintain that university administration has preferred not to resolve the pending issues and remained mute spectators to the deteriorating situation in the university. Due to strike, sources said that classes wore deserted look as all the faculty members boycotted lectures and practical work. Association leaders said that since the formation of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Teachers Association (BGSBUTA) provisional, they have written to the administration for recognition of their body several times but to no avail. A leader of the association said that the university administration has only procrastinated issues but never bothered to respond to any of the communication from the last nine months. He added that Vice-Chancellor of University Prof. Irshad Ahmad Hamal has preferred deafening silence over the demands of the teaching faculty which include release of arrears of Sixth Pay Commission, inclusion of promotion policy for teaching assistants and initiating rotational policy. The teaching staff is also peeved over wrong allotment of quarters. They said that two families have been allotted one residential quarter, which is essentially a two room set. They have been demanding Career Advancement Scheme (CAS). University has been repeatedly reminded about these demands. But to no avail. Teachers maintain that they would continue boycott of classes for indefinite period till their demands already served to the administration are not mitigated. It needs to be reiterated that BGSBU administration had assured the teaching faculty about fulfillment of their demands by September 4, 2012 but when the administration failed to address their demands, they announced boycott of classes from Monday for indefinite period. The decision in this regard was taken in a meeting of BGSBUTA which was held under the chairmanship of Dr Asgar Ali Shah, President of the Association. "Teaching fraternity feels suffocated and so far many teachers have left the university even for jobs like JE, plus two and college lecturers' in the State. Many departments in University are facing shortage of faculty but administration does not bother to fulfill the needs," said a protesting teacher while adding that it is directly affecting quality of education. Teachers feel that administration does not want to create congenial academic atmosphere in the university, added a faculty member. Despite all kinds of problems, teachers have pledged to continue their struggle. They also said that they have already approached Chancellor of the University, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and apprised him of deteriorating situation in the university. |
