Govt starts disbanding VDCs | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 7: The State Government has started the process of disbanding Village Defence Committees, which had played an important and significant part in fighting terrorism, especially in terrorists infested districts of Jammu region. A senior police official said that process of 'rationalising' of VDCs has been started on the directions of influential Valley based politicians. The police holds the view that VDCs have served their utility and that incidents of terrorism have come down, their role should also be reviewed. The 'rationalisation' process also involves analyzing the need to hold guns and the state of weapon given to them. The VDCs were created in the early '90s when terrorism was at its peak and terrorists were carrying out selective killings in Doda, Rajouri, Udhampur and Poonch districts of the Jammu region. The killings were part of the 'Greater Kashmir' perverted plan of separatists and terrorists to force migrations of minority community from these districts on the lines of Kashmiri Pandits from Kashmir and change the demography of the Jammu region. The initial incidents of selective killings did result in some migration especially from Poonch and Bhaderwah. The minority community members in these districts, where they do have a sizeable population, not only stayed back in their homes but with guns and knowing the topography of the area helped in wiping out terrorism. Even members of the majority community also formed a VDCs as they were also targeted by terrorists. There are about 5,000 VDCs which get paltry financial assistance from the Government. The separatists who failed in their design of using terrorists to change demography of the Jammu region have been targeting VDCs on one pretext or the other. They have been openly and publicly asking for disbanding of these communities as they have stood as shield against their designs. These VDC members have given their lives to make the Jammu region terrorism free and retain its demography. The terrorists too have been targeting them. The Government now using flimsy plea of incidents of accidental firing and some 'wrong' case has now started targeting VDCs. |
