To conciliate Geelani, Senior Cong leader toes his line
No Place For Non-State Subjects In JK

JAMMU, Sept 7: This is the Congress. It considers the Muslims of Kashmir a race apart and bars other Indians to work, settle and acquire immovable property in Kashmir, saying it will go with pro-Pakistan Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani and others of his ilk and not allow any non-Kashmiri to live as Indian in this part of the country.
"We will not allow anyone to alter the demography of the State," says a senior Congress leader to conciliate Geelani and others in Kashmir who are opposed to India; who are opposed to the Indian political system, whatever it is; who are opposed to everything Indian; who are opposed to the Amarnath Yatra; who are for a short duration of the Amarnath Yatra; who say those who come to Kashmir pollute its environment and damage its fragile ecology; they come to Kashmir to destroy its culture and vitiate its atmosphere; and who are for forcing their pernicious ideology in the throat of the people of Jammu and Ladakh.
The same Congress leader, had rubbished the outrageous claim of Geelani that attempts are being made to alter the Kashmir demography and said that "nobody from outside the State has been or would be allowed to settle here illegally".
While talking to a local news agency in Srinagar, the same Congress leader said they will not allow anyone to dilute the Muslim-majority status of Jammu and Kashmir and that his Ministry is seeing to it that no Non-State Subject settles either in Kashmir or in Jammu.
He also assured the like of Geelani that concerned Ministry would take action against those who have obtained "fake" Permanent Resident Certificates (PRCs). "We do not have any plans to tamper with the demography of the State. If any non-resident has been issued any State Subject Certificate, the matter will be probed thoroughly," he told, adding that "a high level empowered committee has been set up to look into the matter".
It needs to be underlined that Geelani and others of his ilk, including those belonging to the so-called mainstream outfits, have been day in and day out accusing the Government of trying to change the demography profile of what they call Muslim majority State by issuing PRCs to the non-State Subjects with a view to enabling them to settle in the State on permanent basis.
"They want them to settle here so that the State's Muslim- majority status is compromised," they, United Jihad Council (UJC) and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) chief and chairman Syed Salah-ud-din, have been saying.
It is indeed disturbing to note that the Congress has taken a line that is against the basic structure of the Indian Constitution, which says that any Indian can work and settle anywhere in the country. The Congress and similar other "secular" outfits want the Kashmiri Muslims to exercise all rights all over India, but they do not want other Indians to exercise similar rights in Jammu and Kashmir.
It is this approach of the so-called secular formations which has never allowed Kashmir to become part of national mainstream. They need to discard their divisive approach and take steps which treat the non-State Subjects in the State the way the so-called State Subjects are treated in rest of the country. There is no other alternative to it.
