Post rain affect: Locals in Kangar fear their houses may collapse due to erosion | | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Sept 7: The rains, that lashed the region early this week, brought with them miseries for the residents of Kangar in Bhalwal block, where several stretches of the stone-made protection wall (danga) raised by the streetside in ward No 1 of the village either developed cracks, or were damaged fully. In the immediate vicinity of this stone wall, about 4 ft in height, are the outer walls of several houses, kachcha and pucca. It prevents erosion of land during rains and provides strength to these residential structures. Villagers fear that if immediate steps were not taken to either repair, or reconstruct the damaged portions, another spell of rain would fully wash away the stone wall that passes through the inhabited area. "Once the stone wall is washed away, the outer walls of our houses are likely to collapse due to the erosion of land," they said. Ward No 1 panch Reshma Bibi told ET that the protection wall outside her mud house had collapsed fully. "More rains are sure to cause damage to our house," she added. The stretches of the wall that passes from outside the houses of Noor Hussain, Fateh Din, Ahmad Din, Mir Hussain, Kasham Din, Saif Ali, Liaqat Ali, Noor Hussain, Lal Din, Ghulam Rasool, Mir Ali and Salim Ali were also damaged, Reshma informed. She said the matter had been brought to the notice of Block Development Officer (BDO), Bhalwal, but any action was yet awaited. Mir Hussain said apart from the stone-made protection wall, the village streets were also badly damaged because of rains. Other villagers called upon the authorities concerned to take up repair work on the damaged stone wall at the earliest. They said they failed to understand why the Government agencies were not sincere in providing them good roads and other basic amenities of life. In the adjoining Bhalwal village too, the main road near Baba Badgal devsthan khud is completely washed away and the inner roads are badly damaged. The village also does not have proper drainage system. The road condition was the worst in Dhanoo, Ker, Tarmurian and Tung areas of Bhalwal block which fall under Nagrota Assembly segment. These villages remain cut off from the main towns during rainy days of the year. Their inhabitants were planning to hold a demonstration in support of their demand for good roads. |
