Mirwaiz doesn't represent even microscopic minority
Talks On J&K
9/9/2012 12:10:51 AM
Rustam
JAMMU, Sept 8: All-Party Hurriyat Conference - M (APHC-M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday again used his religious platform to express his outrageous views on Jammu and Kashmir and expressed his willingness to talk to India subject to the condition that New Delhi shows any flexibility. "Hurriyat is ready for talks with India if it shows flexibility by demilitarising Kashmir, revoking black laws, releasing political prisoners and stopping human rights violations, as these measures alone can pave way for a meaningful dialogue" with New Delhi, he said while addressing Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid, here. He suggested that all the three stakeholders of the conflict - India, Pakistan and Kashmiris (in this case Kashmiri-speaking Sunnis) - should sit on table to hammer out a solution of Kashmir. "Hurriyat considers good relations between India and Pakistan as precursor to solution of issues existing between the two countries, particularly Jammu and Kashmir," he said.
Mirwaiz was not the only one who aired outrageous views on Jammu & Kashmir. The APHC-M spokesperson also used the opportunity on the eve of India-Pakistan talks in Islamabad between Indian Foreign Minister SM Krishna and his Pakistan counterpart Hina Rabbani Khar beginning today to clear the outfit's stand on the Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde's September 5 suggestion that the Kashmiri separatists needed to show spirit of accommodation. He rejected the Home Minister's suggestion saying it "exhibits his ignorance regarding the historical facts and ground realities in Kashmir". "We want a resolution of the Kashmir issue according to the wishes of the people of the State (read ethnic Kashmiri Sunnis), who have offered innumerable sacrifices for their rights and aspirations," he said.
What the APHC - M chairman and his spokesperson said yet again established that they will not recognise the realities as they exist in the State and that they will continue to air views which have no taker either in Jammu Pradesh or in the trans-Himalayan Ladakh, or even in the Kashmir valley, which only constituted less than 10 per cent of the State's land area. It will be only proper to point out that Mirwaiz represents not even a microscopic minority. His area of influence is confined to Jamia Masjid area of Srinagar. He commands some support not because he is a popular political leader, but because he is a religious leader representing a particular school of thought. The fact of the matter is that he faces opposition from even within his conglomerate. There are many members in the APHC-M executive body who openly challenge his authority and demand revamping of it.
It is also important to note that even Home Minister Shinde on Thursday had said that there are a few disgruntled groups in Kashmir whose "influence is limited". He was absolutely right. It is a different story that the ambivalent and weak New Delhi, which is under the domination of questionable leadership, has never acted against the handful of miscreants in the Kashmir valley. Had they acted against them, there would not have been Mirwaizs, Geelanis, Maliks and Shahs masquerading as "freedom fighters" in the Valley. One can only hope that New Delhi would rise to the occasion and isolate and bring to justice the undesirable on the charge that they have been working against the Indian State. As for Jammu and Ladakh, their message is loud and clear: No concession to the Kashmiri leadership under any pretext and complete merger of the State with India. There should be no doubt about it. Those who doubt are only fooling themselves and those few whom they, they claim, represent.
