Critics of Amarnath Yatra term SC "unholy route" | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 8: The Supreme Court of India did well to direct the Jammu & Kashmir Government to construct roads from Pahalgam to the holy cave shrine of Amarnath before the commencement of winter. It took suo moto notice of death of so many pilgrims during the just-concluded Amarnath yatra. Over 100 pilgrims died because of mismanagement and inadequate arrangements, including lack of medical facilities en-route the cave shrine. The BJP had also raised this issue in the Rajya Sabha. It had taken on the State Governor and State Government and held them responsible for so many deaths. The BJP even accused the State Governor of working against the Hindu sentiments attached to the cave shrine. Appreciating the views of the BJP, the Home Minister made a commitment on the floor of the Rajya Sabha that all the steps needed to be taken will be taken. The Supreme Court directions and the Parliamentary debate on the issue have not been taken kindly by the fanatics in Kashmir. It is not just Syeed Ali Shah Geelani (at whose behest only a few observed bandh on the issue on September 4) who has been criticizing the Supreme Court intervention. There are many like him, including some opinion makers, who have not taken kindly to the Supreme Court directions and what transpired in the Rajya Sabha. One such opinion makers has come out with an outrageous write-up, titled "Taking unholy route". The very title of the write-up indicates how contemptuous he is as far as the Supreme Court is concerned. He has written thus: "The recent judgment of the Supreme Court directing State Government to construct roads from Pahalgam to Amarnath Cave before the onset of winter is the most unfortunate and ill-informed instruction coming from the highest temple of justice. And if the debate in Indian Parliament on the subject is any indication of what is going to happen next- then be prepared for the worst-the Hindu extremists have started flexing their muscles to achieve judicially in 2012 what they could not achieve politically in 2008. The State Government has a role to play here. It is Constitutionally bound to protect the interests of the State and its people. It should fight the case in Apex Court before a larger bench by engaging counsels well versed with environmental laws. It cannot be a mute spectator to this sort of judicial activism". This is the kind of respect the fanatic have for the religious sensitivities of the Hindu community. The Supreme Court needs to take cognizance of what is being done by certain fundamentalist forces to vitiate the atmosphere in Kashmir. They are advancing spurious arguments. The Supreme Court's intervention has become imperative considering the fact that what is being done in Kashmir by some mischievous elements has the potential of creating a situation similar to the one the State witnessed in 2008. It has to assert its authority and ensure that no one in Kashmir dares to question and challenge its directions and outrage the religious sentiments of the Hindu community which, like other communities, including the Muslim community, enjoys under the Indian Constitution religious freedom. No one can be allowed to term the Supreme Court an "unholy route". It is the only route through which things can be settled in a fair manner and to the satisfaction of all. |
