Farooq unwilling on Mirwaiz's willingness to talks plays spoil spot
9/9/2012 12:12:21 AM
Bashir Assad
SRINAGAR, Sept 8: As usual Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy and National Conference president, Dr. Farooq Abdullah downplayed willingness expressed by Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to enter into a dialogue process with New-Delhi saying that Centre will not beg before the separatists for talks. This is not for the first time that Dr. Abdullah played a spoil spot, in the past too senior Abdullah has allegedly sabotaged the dialogue process between Centre and the Kashmiri separatists for narrow partisan interests.
"It is a welcome development but the Government will not come with a begging bowl before the Hurriyat for talks," Abdullah told reporters after paying homage to his father and National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on his 30th death anniversary at Naseembagh graveyard.
Abdullah was responding to a question if the Centre would initiate talks with separatists after moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed willingness to enter a dialogue process while addressing Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid, the other day.
Observers attribute much significance to senior Abdullah's statement which he made here today after paying homage to his father and founder of National Conference Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.
They believe that senior Abdullah having eye on the 2014 Assembly elections would desperately try to keep the separatists away from any democratic process and today’s statement is aimed at provoking the moderate separatists in order to keep them away from any meaningful engagement.
When asked to comment on Abdullah's statement, chief spokesperson of opposition People’s Democratic Party, Nayeem Akhtar said, "don't you know why Abdullah is making such statements, they don't want the settlement of issues they have developed huge vested interest in the status-quo". Akhtar said that Dr. Abdullah has actually displayed his greed and frustration by making such assertions, we have been saying all along that NC leadership was responsible for death and destruction because they have always preferred power over people’s aspirations and today we stand vindicated.
Akhtar, however, urged upon the central Government to start a fresh meaningful and result oriented unconditional dialogue with all shades of opinions in Jammu and Kashmir to address the internal dimensions of the problem. "If Centre can talk to Pakistan over Kashmir why not with the people of the State," Akhtar said.
He said that, immaterial whether Dr. Abdullah is scared of any serious engagement on Kashmir for obvious reasons, Centre should come forward and extend unconditional offer of talks to people of all shades including the Hurriyat.
On the Indo-Pakistan Foreign Ministers' talks in Islamabad, Akhtar said that both the countries should initiate some bold Jammu and Kashmir centric Confidence Building Measures to remove the trust deficit between the two countries and should strive for a hassle free movement of goods and people across the Line of Control (LoC).
Former chairman of Hurriyat Conference, Professor Abdul Gani Bhat refused to comment on senior Abdullah's Saturday statement. Bhat, however, said that India and Pakistan were talking and the talks are on. "They are talking on issues concerning the two countries like trade and security and they should talk. However, India and Pakistan should talk Kashmir too and it will be in the interest of both the countries if Kashmir figures in talks".
"Whatever the level, whether at Prime Ministers Level, Foreign Ministers or Foreign Secretaries level, Kashmir should be discussed as you cannot bring in peace and stability in the region without resolving the issues concerning both the countries including Kashmir" Bhat told Early Times adding Kashmir has to be addressed because it is a flash point in the region.
On whether Hurriyat will talk to New-Delhi if invited, Bhat said, "we will be talking as good negotiators and hope both India, Pakistan and also the people of Kashmir will understand the dynamics of the change".
