Tributes paid to Sheikh Abdullah in Cong office.....? | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Sept 8: Srinagar: In a function, perhaps first of its kind, National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah's death anniversary was today observed by the functionaries of District unit of Congress in Srinagar where tributes were reportedly paid to the late leader. A proper function, though on a small scale was organized in the office premises in which floral tributes were offered in front of the picture of late Sheikh Abdullah by the district president and other party colleagues. Senior Congress leaders have taken strong notice of the development that is being seen as against the programmes and policies of the party. Sources said that a function of small scale was organized by the district president Abdul Ghani Khan in the office premises to observe the day in remembrance of NC founder, which is normally organized by the National Conference with fervor across the State. District president along with few other functionaries also spoke on the occasion and described Sheikh Abdullah tallest leader of the times in the State. Sources said though there was a small gathering of workers and supporters of the functionaries, the senior leaders of the party conveyed serious concern and directed the functionaries to wrap up the proceedings and raise other issues of coalition Government so as to give it a colour of any normal function, soon after the word spread that Sheikh Abdullah's death anniversary function was being observed in Congress office. Sources also said the senior leaders also directed to issue a press note with mention of some current issues concerning governance of NC-Congress coalition , which was done indeed in no time. A press note was issued in which the Congress body and leaders had hailed , though customarily and apparently out of context the decision of the Ministry of Cooperatives to defer the polls of Cooperative Banks, sources said. Even as the senior leaders of the party are said to have taken strong notice of the move of the functionaries. Senior Congress leader from Kashmir Muzaffar Parray denied any such function having been organized in which Congress paid tributes to NC founder. "No…there was no such programme…..we are in coalition but there is no such precedence …..NC people never pay tributes to the leaders of Congress …..why would Congress do that ….." Parray said adding that the functionaries had gathered in the office to discuss some other issues " we have issued a press note to that effect….and there is no mention of observance of such function...," Parray maintained. Sources, however, attribute this development to the fact that the district president and other functionaries belonged to NC earlier. They have shifted to Congress but such moves only reflect their deep association with the old party. Sources also say that rather than being a gesture in sheer ignorance of political repercussions , it could be a step in preparation of shifting back to the NC by these functionaries. |
